simon's bedroom makeover

For Simon's fourth birthday (Dec. 9) I decided that his big present should be a room makeover. When we moved to this house almost four years ago, Simon's room was a bit of an after thought. He was only six months old, still slept in our room, and there was too much going on to really put much thought into his play space. As he's gotten older and needed more room to play, I've felt slightly guilty that I never made his room special or suited to him. It's kind of been the "whatever-is-handed-down-or-leftover" room. And it wasn't inviting for play or imagination because it was crowded, disorganized and small.

When Ella got a bunk bed, Simon insisted on spending weekend nights in her room, and that underscored my feeling that he needed to feel excited about his own space. We conned my dad and step mom into lugging another IKEA loft/bunk bed when they visited us for Thanksgiving and I set to work on the makeover the week before Simon turned four. Here are the before and afters...

Bed, before: It was a platform bed and was awesome for transitioning from a crib to big boy bed. But with a small room, it was impractical since there was no way to store anything underneath.

Bed, after: IKEA Kura Reversible bed with canopy. Instant imagination tunnel and tons of space to play underneath. I imagine making some curtains that could enclose the play space below to create a hideout if he fancied. Someday, maybe.

You'll also notice that I (along with my amazing painting gal pals) painted the walls a deep navy blue. It was a risk in such a small room, but the large windows and coat of crisp white on all the trim make it pretty sharp. All the bright colors POP against this deep blue backdrop. I'm in love with the color! The star wall light stays on most of the time, especially at night, because the deep hue on the walls absorbs light and it gets super dark under the canopy.

Closet, before: It was nothing special. The doors are made of thick particle board and couldn't be any cheaper or more unimpressive. Simon used them for collecting random stickers.

Closet, after: I used an entire can of magnetic primer under a fresh coat of white. I wanted Simon to be able to spell words and use his magnetic letters and phonics system on the face of the doors. But even after ten coats, the primer is only strong enough to hold the thinnest, flattest magnets. The larger letter magnets barely stay on. It's still kind of neat though.

Ceiling/Light fixture, before: TERRIBLE! Ugh! Plaster textured ceiling with ancient, not so cool vintage flush mount light.

Ceiling/Light fixture, after: I hand drew some simple, cartoon clouds and used the remnants of an old can of blue paint I had leftover from Ella's room at our old house. I love the way it turned out! (Ignore the bit of white still left around the base of the new fixture...I'll have to touch that up!)

And the light fixture was such a fun shade of yellow, it was what gave me the inspiration to move forward with a dramatic shade of midnight blue. They complement each other, don't they?

Wall art, before: I kept the airplane decals that I had used in his room before because I thought he'd miss them.

Wall art, after:  Fortunately, the decals show up better on this new wall color. The same goes for the pinball glass that has always hung in his room. It is highlighted and more noticeable now.

He loves it, and I am thrilled to have done such a massive overhaul on his room! The amazing thing is, I was able to achieve pretty dramatic changes without spending much money since paint is the biggest alteration and the bed and lights were IKEA-mazingly affordable! It was fun to do and I hope it will bring him hours of imaginative play.

where I left off

A lot happens in the span of three months. That's how long it's been since I recorded anything on this blog! It's so hard to find the time and I've avoided spending extra time on the computer since it steals time away from the kids. So, I've got a lot of material to cover in this post...And since it seems crazy to try to catch up, I'll just give you some "best of" material.

In October, Ella had a school trip to a pumpkin farm. The photo below is of her and her closest school buddy, Makenzie. They are a super cute pair but sometimes I'm flabbergasted at the drama that occurs with girls in KINDERGARTEN! Seriously, sometimes it seems like seventh grade stuff.

Makenzie and Ella
Later in the month, around my birthday, we visited Mimi in Edina. We had a great hike at Thousand Hills State Park and enjoyed visiting the petroglyphs. Simon loved being out in the wide open space and he mentioned the hike again to me just this past week. We'll be visiting this spot again for sure in the spring when it's warmer.

Simon on the run amidst the trees
I finally got him to sit still long enough to snap this shot! This boy is known for his boots!

In that same trip, we spent lots of time at various parks. Mom's apartment is pretty small so we're always looking for ways to get the wiggles out. The above shot is Simon playing guitar with a stick at the old Rutledge school playground I mentioned in a post long ago. And below is Ella looking sweet at the same park.

For Halloween, we kept things simple. We trick or treated just along our street for a couple of blocks and then went to a party at some friends' place. Ella was Elastigirl from The Incredibles, Simon was Spiderman, and Josie was a daisy. There were so many stinkin' cute photos, but I just don't have the room to share them all!

This costume was amazingly cute but didn't stay on very long. Babies and head gear don't mix.

Spidey and Elastigirl
In November, I (and a handful of amazing girlfriends) painted the cherry red kitchen a more subdued bluish gray. (Enter *sigh of relief* here.) The paint job also included a chalkboard wall by the fridge that I use for my menu planning as well as for keeping track of tasks and weekly events. It has also come in handy for the kids art fix. Simon has drawn me some interesting works. The below images come from his "Garden of Eden" depiction. Simon is particularly interested in this Bible story, in fact, when we read it last time, I asked him why Adam and Eve had to leave the garden. His answer was, "Cause there was a SNAKE in there!!!"
This Garden features three snakes that say. "P P P" instead of hissing.
Detail of snake's face
And we'll end this "best of" with a shot of Josie. Man has she grown. But I'll give the low down on that in a post all her own. Hopefully. If I can find a free moment.

what happens when a little boy sneaks the camera

As I flipped through the photos of Simon's first day of preschool on my camera, I discovered there was a library of shots that I had not taken. Some had a very abstract quality. For instance this:

And this:

Others were intriguing because of their vantage point and cropping, like this:

and this:

Who could this mysterious artist be? Oh wait...I think I might have found a clue:

I know of only one little boy with feet like that....

going on 8 months + high chair makeover

Josie is changing so rapidly! Not only did she start crawling before she turned seven months, she hasn't reached eight months yet and she's decided it's fun to pull up on the furniture. *Gasp!* Her little body doesn't look like it's supposed to do that yet, but, dang is she strong! We had to move her crib mattress to the low position because she keeps standing up in there and hanging out like a little jail bird. She hasn't started cruising yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if she got that one on under her belt before her eight month birthday!

Here she is hanging at a the coffee table:

Sorry it's blurry! I rushed to snap the shot before she sat back down.
We've also noticed that she likes to watch tv. The other two kids didn't really seem interested in tv until they were around two. But she's definitely taking notice. Not good. Here she is losing interest in me and watching baseball or something:

Gotta love those luscious thighs!
See the owl onesie she's wearing? I adore it! It was a handmade gift by my good friend Betsy who had a little boy (Shepherd) a few weeks after Josie was born. I was so touched she made time to stitch me up a one of a kind beauty when she has her own kids to look after. That's just like her though.

Here is the other little project Betsy came through on:

What was supposed to be her helping me recover our old high chair turned into her completely doing the project for me! What a friend, right!? This high chair isn't very impressive, but it's functional and I didn't want to shell out any money for a new one. The old vinyl was so ugly, ragged, and dated (not in a good way.) I got some vintage oil cloth on Etsy for much less than I could get a new chair, even used. And now it has more life than your run-of-the-mill high chair. Thanks Betsy!!

the new bunkbed

Josie's crib is in my former office which is right off of our bedroom. Long term, our plan is for the girls to share a room once Josie sleeps through the night...probably after she weans. We decided to buy a bunk bed for when the little one transitions out of the crib and we found one we really liked at IKEA. Even though Josie most likely won't be sleeping in a big bed for another couple of years, we went ahead and bought the bunk bed while we were in Atlanta since we don't happen upon IKEA very often (boo hoo.)

The bunk bed has become the most popular place in the house. For the first week, poor Simon made teary requests to sleep on the bottom bunk. (Possibly related to the issue in my former post.) As a compromise, we've designated "school nights" as nights in your own bed, and "family nights" as nights where Simon can share the bunk bed.

Here it is. Simple. What I like most is that the top bunk isn't very high.

The canopy is like being under the stars. Very cozy. We also got a flower lamp for the wall. It casts a lovely glow at night.

During our Joplin trip, I found some vintage pillow cases, brand new in the package. I love the pattern and color. I switched out Ella's linens to all white so bottom and top match and the pillow cases add just the pop of color the bed needs.

Jungle themed vintage pillow cases
I'm so satisfied with the bed purchase since it was very affordable, is well made and sturdy, and the right height to keep my knees from shaking with little ones climbing up and down. And the canopy adds a sense of whimsy and imagination but also keeps kids from jumping on the top bunk (tricky, aren't I?) I do think we will go ahead and get one for Simon around his birthday/Christmas and use it as a loft bed. His room is about half the size of the girls' room and he could use the extra space to play. He's asking for a Superman room and it's on my to do list since I've never spent time making his room special for him. Now...to find the time!

nostalgia (part 2) and thrifting treasure!

The kids and I had a great time in Edina with Mimi. I find time in northeast Missouri incredibly relaxing...the pace is just so darn SLOW! I dig it. I need to go slow sometimes.

Mom relished the time with the kids and spent lots of cuddle time with Josie. I know she'd kill me for posting this photo of her since it was first thing in the morning, but I thought it was too sweet.

She's so silly with the kids. They just love spending time with her and Ella giggles more with her than anybody!

You see why they love her? She's a goof!

Anyhoo, we took several trips to the Edina park I mentioned in the last post. I took lots of photos of the kids on the playground equipment just because it tickles me that they love the park that I spent so much time at growing up.

On the "covered wagon" at the Edina Park

Our time with my Uncle Steve and Aunt Elaine was really nice. Elaine let the kids make our lunch and they had a blast doctoring up ham sandwiches and pimento cheese and then cutting them out into heart or flower shapes. And then Elaine had them put their creations on a lovely platter with a doily underneath and the table looked so pretty with candles lit. It felt like a special tea party just for them. They were very good to my kids even though they DID bang on the grand piano.

I spent some time uptown where I took this shot. I've always liked the side of this building. There used to be a restaurant/bar through this door in the basement called "The Blue Room." I used to love eating hamburgers here with my grandma and parents and they had amazingly greasy onion rings. We played Tron and pool in the back of the restaurant and always stayed away from the end of the room where the bar was since it was so dark and smoky. As a kid, this place held mystery and charm. I have a feeling I would find it dark and disturbing now...but I choose to remember it fondly.

Mom was kind enough to hang with the kids to give me some time to scour the two thrift shops uptown. I just LOVE going into small town thrift stores because people in rural communities think the stuff that I like is just old junk. I like finding treasure in the discarded! And it's all so much cheaper in smaller communities. I have to share what I found!

I've been looking for a small lamp to use at my computer station. My keyboard is on a slide-out tray and if it's evening or nighttime, I can never see the keys. My computer is in an IKEA cabinet and is narrow, only slightly wider than my monitor, so finding a mini light that isn't stupid looking has been a challenge. But all hope is not lost! I discovered the cutest little lamp that seems almost as if it was made for the little spot by my computer! And it was only five bucks!

Isn't he the cutest little thing?

And this afghan was only three dollars. You couldn't even buy the yarn for that price! The colors (teal and yellow trim) match my living room perfectly, it shows no sign of ever being used and I love that some little old lady made it. It's unique!

Then we have a couple of small framed pieces. I spotted a cheap framed paint by number. I know it's kitsch, but I like it anyway.

And the embroidered mattes in these two frames charmed me. I love that someone took the time to embellish them and I imagine doctoring up the frames and hanging them in the girls' room.

Did your grandma stitch these?

Finally, the pièce de résistance. I finally found a nightstand for Bryan's side of the bed. I've been looking off and on for a few years. And this baby was under twenty bucks! I love the little legs and small drawer.

Ain't she a beaut?

I won't bore you with the little cups I bought. But they're sweet and only a dime each. Edina is on it's way out, I think. But I still like visiting. And so do the kids. Thanks Mimi for the fun!

trip around the world

The kids went up to the building while Daddy was making a short video for the Jubilee website. Here is the tomfoolery that occurred on the visit:

elijah and anna

Elijah and Anna had a special date night and saw a show at the Fox. I felt like such a mom taking their photo, like it was their prom or something. I had to post a photo since Elijah doesn't get much coverage here on my blog (he's not really our kid...but he IS part of our family.) They are just too lovely. We all adore them. Anna is seriously one of the kids' absolute favorite people in this world.

They're pretty adorable, right?

collage

Today was our first real, non-vacation day since Ella has been out of school. So we were back to our normal long afternoons together while Simon napped. She helped me clean bathrooms and hung out with me while I fed the baby. But then we had a good chunk of time doing some art projects at the kitchen table while Josie slept. We decided to make a collage and I helped Ella pick out pieces to cut and helped her with some of the more detailed trimming. She ultimately created this though:

Pretty crazy, right? The shiny globs are mounds of glitter glue that she decorated with after we assembled our collage. She enjoyed this new project so much. As we worked together she said, "Mom. This is SO FUN. I could do this ALL DAY!"

writing and illustrating

Ella has been a little reader since, well, almost birth. (I may exaggerate slightly...) I remember her sitting with books as soon as she could sit up. For instance:

Since she can actually read now, she has taken a liking to penning her own stories. It all started when I found this amazing "create your own storybook" kit at target on clearance. (An amazing deal, I might add...normally $20, marked down to $3.50!)

She wrote and illustrated her own fairy tale in no time. Some days, she couldn't wait to get home from school to work on it.

But I prefer some of the handmade books she's been making lately.

This story reads:

One day, Ella's Mom got a cat for Ella. A dog can go "RRRRRR at a cat." I loved the cat. Thank you Mom for the cat. The Mom said, "I love the cat." Until the cat had babies.

I LOVE this story!

vintage treasure

I found a basement sale online this past week and was giddy at all the amazing vintage treasures. I bought this little beauty for Simon's room. It's an old piece of painted glass from a pinball machine, circa 1950(ish). So excited to hang this in his room!

silhouettes

I've been getting all kinds of creative urges and ideas over the last couple of months and have just felt all out inspired lately! I find myself noticing beauty in all kinds of objects and places and feeling a real urge to DO something. Life is crazy busy right now and I've got lots of design work going on, but I just had to do something with this creative compulsion! So I found these frames on clearance at tj maxx and liked the shape and detail...I've been wanting to do some silhouettes of the kids so here's what I came up with.

Nothing beats the sweet profile of little kids noses and lips! Now, if I just had a decent color of paint on the wall to do these little red beauties justice!
